This is the dramatization of the true story of Union Soldier Joseph Hoover, who witnessed many incredible moments of the Civil War and wrote two diaries which survive today. In 1864, he was captured at the Battle of the Wilderness and taken to the notorious Camp Andersonville. After four months he was transferred to another camp in Florence, South Carolina where he and a friend escaped with the help of slaves and the Underground Railroad. Joseph was later wounded in the war but survived and eventually went back to his farm in upstate New York where worked as a cabinet maker and went on to live to be 84.
