The curse, the miracle and the donkey tells the story of Gramlote, a small community in the region of Norte de Santander (Colombia) which through its inhabitants, political and religious personalities testify on the past, present and future of a community that saw its houses tumble one by one, slowly, at nature’s pace. In this community, unprecedentedly strong rainfall during the rainy season, compounded by improper use of natural resources and lack of sufficient urban planning, caused the earth to move in a peculiar geological phenomenon, turning the town’s 150-year history into scrubs. Some town dwellers claim that it is the apocalypse or divine punishment. In a deeply religious area, towards the middle of the last century Father Ordóñez stood before the faithful to bless them and at the same time he cursed the town: “Gramlote shall become a Tartagal”. The curse made by that priest is today a fact, from the perspective of faith. “Nobody died”, and therein lies the miracle.
