Job Description

The Uncle (28-45yrs):

General Description/Character Background:

The Uncle is, well, he’s a complicated guy, but ultimately, he’s a psychopath with a soft spot for revenge. To understand the Uncle and his motivations you have to understand his relationship with Sparrow and Phoebe’s parents. His brother is their dad. When they were kids, he and his brother were both raised to be in the military. Both were capable, butt his brother, Todd was resistant to his parents' wishes. The Uncle was the older child and would do anything to get his parents' approval. Deep down he was jealous that Todd had the courage to disobey his parents. Because he was the older sibling he bore the weight of his parents wishes on his shoulders as would do anything to make them proud. However, for the brothers’ drunken father The Uncle was never enough. This caused a significant amount of mental health issues that he ultimately compressed and pretended as if they didn’t exist. As a child he tried to be enough, he tried to be an adult and take care of his family in the way he thought was right, but for his parents he was never enough and he very often received the brunt of their frustrations. Over the course of his childhood and teenage years his mental problems become evident to his parents and he suffers greatly for them as they believe they believe that mental health isn’t real.

When the brothers were in their late teens/early 20s, The Uncle happened to be dating a girl named Robin, one of his brothers close friends and longtime crush. When Robin tells him she’s pregnant and accidentally reveals she also slept with his brother, he has his first episode. Triggered by his rage he grabs a kitchen knife and tries to kill Robin. She flees to his parent’s place where his brother still lives and he follows her. In their parents front lawn they have a massive confrontation in which Todd ends up shooting the young Uncle in order to stop him from hurting Robin. The result of this confrontation is that his parents send him to a psychiatric hospital until he is “able” to function properly in society.

Twenty years later after years of rage and mistreatment at this psychiatric ward he realizes that his parents and family have not only forgotten about him but never truly cared about him; in the end he was nothing but a disappointment. While in the psychiatric facility his parents perish but nobody ever bothers to tell him. His resentment toward his own family grows and grows and he learns to control and change his personality enough to convince the doctors that he is sane and ready to be released to the outside world. However, as soon as he is free, he lies about his release date and sneakily kills the parents faking a car crash and then approaches the kids. He initially hides his personality, but there are little bits that show his discrimination especially toward Sparrow because they are both non-binary and not his biological child (he still thinks Phoebe is). His plan was to take the kids to the cabin and drown them in the lake. However, he wasn’t expecting Marty and wasn’t prepared to have collateral damage.

Whenever The Uncle changes his personality whether consciously or subconsciously he scratches a neck tattoo of an eagle with his index and middle fingers.

The Uncle’s arc is unachievable for him in the end. Although he is already too far gone, there was maybe a sliver of hope that by reconnecting with his daughter, he might actually lose his psychopathic tendencies. However, he fails, and ultimately pays the price.

The Uncle is the part of us that struggles to overcome our own negative qualities.
