Job Description

Man Down
written by Victoria Grant
September 20, 2021 Made in Highland
This script has no audio dialogue and is comprised of a series
of sounds:
- heartbeats
- breath sounds
CHARACTERS:
1.MAN DOWN - unconscious man living on the streets surrounded
by his few belongings
2.WOMAN - who performs CPR
I would like to develop the physical characteristics of these
characters with my peers.
CPR is a detailed activity that meant to be performed quickly.
LOCATION - isolated and vacant storefront area and sidewalk in
an urban downtown area.
TIME LAPSE required.
Can I compress the CPR process into less than 1 or 2 minutes
effectively with the presence of sound?
Made in Highland
The SOUND of a normal rhythmic HEARTBEAT.
> OVER BLACK
EXT. CITY STREETSCAPE - DAWN
An older WOMAN walks towards the camera along an isolated
vacant downtown street carrying shopping bags.
The WOMAN stops and notices an unconscious, poorly dressed and
dishevelled body facing upward of MAN DOWN lying partially
outside a store vestibule onto the sidewalk with his scattered
belongings around him.
We hear the SOUND of the WOMAN’s HEARTBEAT beat louder and
faster as she acknowledges Man Down.
She drops her bags and scans the area. She kneels next to MAN
DOWN yelling into his ears and pinching his shoulders.
EXT. STOREFRONT VESTIBULE - DAWN
MAN DOWN does not flinch to verbal or physical stimuli.
The WOMAN turns on her knees and grabs her purse behind her
dumping the contents of the purse on the sidewalk. She gropes
the contents of her purse in search of something.
The WOMAN turns toward Man Down, tilts his head, lifts his chin
and opens his mouth and inserts a sweeping finger in his mouth.
She places her hands on MAN DOWN’s chest and hovers her ear
close to MAN DOWN’s nose and mouth and moves her hovering ear
down to his chest. She rests her ear onto MAN DOWN’s chest
listening. The WOMAN sighs and inhales deeply then frisks his
body and feels a wrist pulse.
We hear the SOUND of MAN DOWN’S SLOW FAINT HEARTBEAT replacing
the SOUND of the WOMAN’s heartbeat.
The SOUND of MAN DOWN’s faint and slowing HEARTBEAT continues
during CPR.
The WOMAN anchors her body perpendicular to Man Down’s body and
initiates CPR. She pumps MAN DOWN’s sternum with her
overlapping hands with her arms aligned with her shoulders. The
WOMAN stops, hovers her ear over his mouth and chest. She
continues compressions. (Time Lapse?)
We hear the SOUND of MAN DOWN’s HEARTBEAT slowing down.
The WOMAN is visibly tired from performing compressions and
frantically continues with failing lifesaving CPR.
We hear the SOUND of MAN DOWN’S HEARTBEAT stop.

The woman folds Man Down’s arms across his chest, stands up,
brushes and straightens her clothes while cautiously looking
around the street for bystanders. She is alone.
The WOMAN turns away from him, collects her bags tossing her
belongings back into her purse. She looks over her shoulder at
MAN DOWN and quickly walks away.
> INTERCUT WITH:
We see MAN DOWN’S lifeless body lying half on the sidewalk and
half in the store vestibule entrance way with his arms folded
on his chest as the Woman walks away.
> FADE OUT.
